     About Us

The UNO AAUP chapter is a nonprofit professional organization whose general purpose is to maintain and advance professional standards within higher education. In doing so, we believe that we will serve the best interests of society by protecting the time-honored American tradition of academic freedom and tenure and shared institutional governance. The UNO AAUP is an affiliate of the American Association of University Professors, whose national office is located in Washington, DC. Click here for a brief history of national AAUP and here for history on the UNO AAUP Chapter.

The UNO AAUP provides a number of benefits to faculty on our campus.

We are the bargaining unit for faculty contracts. We negotiate on behalf of all full-time tenure-track and tenured faculty and instructors and represent faculty in contract disputes. Our grievance team also helps members navigate their rights under the contract. We consult regularly with administration and faculty regarding contract issues and provide advice on matters of academic freedom. Joining the UNO AAUP as a dues-paying member supports this important work.

Dues paying members also have the opportunity to:

  • Attend member social happy-hours and dinners.
  • Vote on or serve in UNO chapter leadership and contract ratification.
  • Participate in the Nebraska Conference of the AAUP.
  • Get access to National AAUP benefits, such as webinars, guidebooks, a subscription to Academe, and discount insurance programs.
  • Get access to National AFT benefits after the National AAUP and AFT agreed to an affiliation agreement in 2022.

The UNO AAUP:

  • Represents faculty in any contract disputes
  • Consults with faculty regarding contract issues
  • Maintains a presence at the Nebraska Unicameral
  • Sponsors regular Thursday Happy Hours
  • Hosts chapter dinners
  • Funds Kolasa and Greer scholarships: two $1000 graduate scholarships annually for UNO students
  • Co-sponsors of Nebraska AAUP meetings, events and dinners
  • Sponsors presentations on timely issues in academia related to faculty governance

As of 2020, UNO-AAUP members are also members of the Omaha Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. The added membership benefits, which include some financial assistance and options, are available here. As of 2022, UNO-AAUP members are also members of the AFT and you can learn more at the National AAUP website.
